Treat the window as guidance

A drinking window is an informed estimate, not an instruction. It helps you see whether a bottle is likely to be young, ready, at its peak or worth opening soon.

SmartCellar can keep the general profile window and a window of your own when your storage, taste or experience suggests something different.

Set your own window

Open the bottle, edit the wine or cellar details, and add start and end years where known.

  1. 1. Use the profile window when the published guidance looks sound.
  2. 2. Use a custom cellar window when your storage, taste, or previous tasting suggests a different timing.
  3. 3. Add a short note if you will want to remember why you chose those years.

Use the window when choosing a bottle

Filter by drinking window before dinner, when choosing a gift or before buying more wine. A ready bottle may still deserve to be held if it is the last one; a wine with several bottles left may be just right for an ordinary supper.

  • Look through ready-to-drink bottles from time to time.
  • Adjust the window after tasting another bottle from the case.
  • Ask Cella for a shortlist when several wines look ready.
